Job Overview

Perplexity is looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to join our small team revolutionizing the way people search and interact with the internet. You will be responsible for leading design, implementation, and scaling of backend systems that power web, mobile, and browser products. Responsibilities include building scalable systems that ingest and process data from the web, files, and other sources; optimizing interfaces that interact with databases and caching systems; collaborating with PMs, frontend engineers, and other stakeholders to understand product requirements; working closely with AI, Search, and Data Science teams to iterate on non-deterministic systems; managing a complex orchestration system with many moving parts and interfaces; scaling, optimizing, and load balancing multiple services with rapidly changing needs. Qualifications include strong experience with Python, strong experience with databases and caching, experience with AWS cloud infrastructure at scale, experience working with high-scale data and non-deterministic systems like LLMs, and 4+ years of engineering experience. The company has experienced tremendous growth and adoption since launching the world’s first fully functional conversational answer engine in 2022, growing from 2.5 million questions per day at the start of 2024 to around 20 million daily queries in December 2024. They have significant funding from respected technology investors and a rapidly growing employee base. Final offer amounts depend on experience and expertise.
