Principal Software Engineer (Python/AWS) | HPC Research Platform | Elite Boston Hedge FundAn elite quantitative hedge fund in Boston is growing their most high-profile engineering group. This team works directly on the underlying technology for this firm’s most valuable IP: the proprietary investment strategies and models created by their world-class researchers. They’re in the midst of a greenfield effort to build cutting edge, industry leading infrastructure, applications, and platforms for their quantitative research and investment teams. Over the past 5 years, they’ve invested heavily in the engineering organization, bringing on exceptional engineers from top technology and investment firms. They have a tight-knit, collaborative, and meritocratic culture, a flat hierarchy, and very little bureaucracy limiting the velocity of development or innovation.
This role will own a variety of projects focused on different aspects of the investment process. You’ll also help design and build a cloud-native, state-of-the-art high performance compute platform. You’ll collaborate directly with Researchers and Portfolio Managers to own projects from conception to implementation, building POCs, soliciting feedback, iterating, and building full-scale production systems and tools from scratch. You’ll be a hands-on thought leader responsible for guiding projects, mentoring other engineers, setting direction, and leading by example everyday.
An ideal candidate is Python expert that has significant experience building cloud-native, data intensive, high throughput, low-latency applications and systems from scratch. You’re an expert at defining enterprise architecture, but love to code and build things yourself. You’re excited to tackle the biggest, most complex problems, and thrive in an environment full of exceptionally smart, driven, inquisitive colleagues.
Responsibilities:Design and build cutting edge quantitative research systems and toolsHelp expand and optimize a next gen data and HPC platformHelp define enterprise architecture, set strategic direction for the engineering org, evaluate new technologies, and drive innovation across multiple areasMentor junior engineers on coding best practices, architecture, etc.
Skills:Deep expertise using Python to build AWS-native, data intensive, high throughput, low-latency applications and systems from scratchExperience implementing a high-performance modern data lakehouse, distributed query engine, and distributed compute frameworks (i.e. Apache Iceberg, DeltaLake, Dremio, Trino, Spark, Airflow, Dask, Slurm, AWS Batch, Pandas/Polars, etc.) and navigating the inherent design tradeoffs
