Job Overview

xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. The team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence with a flat organizational structure. The Applied AI Engineer role involves working on a high-priority project integrating xAI’s expertise into the X platform, which has approximately 600 million monthly users. Responsibilities include designing and architecting recommendation algorithms across various product surfaces in X (Timelines, Ads, Video, Search, Notifications), leveraging xAI’s infrastructure and AI stacks to enhance user experience, writing data pipelines and training jobs that learn from product data, iterating and improving algorithms through real-time user feedback and experimentation, and ensuring scalability and efficiency of machine learning systems. Candidates should have knowledge of data infrastructure like Kafka, Clickhouse, and Spark, experience with recommender systems and/or deep learning applications at industrial scale, and skills in DL frameworks such as JAX or PyTorch. Exceptional candidates may have experience writing CUDA kernels. The interview process includes a phone interview, a deep dive coding challenge, and a meet and greet with the wider team. The role is based in Palo Alto, CA, and candidates are expected to be located near the Bay Area or open to relocation.
